Having looked at all the options for an individual to broadcast a music show live and to archive content for on demand listeners, there were frankly not a lot of options. Mixcloud, for a modest monthly fee allow me to do this show legally. If groups/composers played are registered with the PRS then they will receive royalties. The shows won't suddenly disappear because of copyright issues like on Facebook, YouTube etc.
Whilst it is true to say Mixcloud is predominately aimed at dance music DJ's, other genres and vibes have also made it their home. Many shows created for stand alone internet radio stations store their recorded shows there. The Outsiders is a Mixcloud original, fiercely independent and uncensored, an exclusive if you will, because frankly no one else wants us. Yet. At the moment we are not syndicated to any other internet 'radio station'.
What is important is that you register for a free Mixcloud account, a simple username/password, so that when you listen to The Outsiders your view is counted. You can also follow the show to get notifications when a new show is live and subsequently archived, you can leave comments on the shows and interact in a chatbox live Sunday night. If you don't register then it looks like not many people are listening, which is quite depressing really.
A lot of the new music we play is obtained and purchased through Bandcamp and we cannot stress enough how important this website is to independent music creators who want full control of their releases and to receive at least 85% of the sale. It is your own record label, a shopfront for releases and even merchandise if you are so inclined.
They take a 15% cut on any transaction which is pretty remarkable compared to other avenues. When was the last time you heard a 'signed band' receive 85% of anything they created? Bandcamp also holds occasional Fridays where 100% of the proceeds go to the artists. And what's more you receive sales money within a matter of hours not months.
Having been bought out it remains to be seen as to whether Bandcamp can remain such a beacon of light compared alongside the likes of Spotify and streaming services in general. Direct To Consumer DTC is putting your music back into your hands and out of theirs.
I use the term us and we because it sounds better than just me, a semi-retired procrastinator. My name is Dave Fennessy and I am an Indie Pop veteran/survivor. Having come though the ranks of schoolboy glam rock tomfoolery I always suspected there was more music out there than what BBC Radio 1 was spoon feeding the general public during the day. The record pluggers who gifted the personality DJ's and producers with rewards for only playing their records over all the others. It was the tip of the iceberg not to mention deception and fraud.
One Friday night I stumbled across the John Peel Show by accident, and the world was never the same again. All that hidden music, new genres and attitudes, bedroom pop groups, fanzines and clubs, it was all there.
And so having been involved in the indie scene mostly as a member of the audience, a record buyer, a gig promoter but more importantly a fan and a supporter, I decided after all these years to give something back. I've been collecting music like a bastard and it did seem an awful shame to just keep it to myself.
Whilst there are many other indie music shows to listen to online, The Outsiders is not the same as all the others.
